To open Northwest Film Forum's A Man, A Blade, An Empty Road: The Summer of Samurai film series, AJE performed new improvisations inspired by classic Japanese chanbara (swordplay) films that were projected during the performance. This was part of Excavations in the Floating World: Japanese-Language Cinemas in Seattle, an evening of informal presentations, reminiscence and chat about Seattle's late and lamented Toyo and Kokusai movie houses which played all manner of Japanese films, including many great samurai pictures, during their heyday.
