Sounds of Shadow and Light

October 8 – 10, 2004
Broadway Performance Hall
1625 Broadway
Seattle, Washington

The Northwest premiere of two short film comedies from 1929 by Yasujiro Ozu, A Straight Forward Boy and I Graduated, But..., were shown with A Page Of Madness, Teinosuke Kinugasa's 1926 silent film masterpiece, a poignant story about an old man who works in an insane asylum to be near his wife.

Yasujiro Ozu's A Straight Forward Boy and I Graduated, But … were two of six films the director made in 1929.  The versions screened are rediscovered fragments of longer films that no longer exist.  Ozu went on to a long, illustrious career that produced many masterpieces, including Tokyo Story, and he is considered the "most Japanese of Japanese filmmakers."

These films were accompanied by new music scores performed live by AJE.  Performing with AJE was taiko drummer Stan Shikuma.

Co-sponsored by Northwest Film Forum, Jack Straw Productions, International Examiner, Japan America Society and Northwest Asian American Film Festival.
